Model A Flywheel Ring Gear (1928-40) A-6384
The Model A Flywheel Ring Gear (A-6384) is a direct replacement ring gear for 1928-1940 Ford four-cylinder engines. Shrunk onto the outer edge of the flywheel, the ring gear provides the toothed surface engaged by the starter motor to crank the engine during starting.
After decades of use, the teeth on the original ring gear can become worn, chipped or rounded, leading to poor starter engagement, grinding noises or difficulty starting the engine. Replacing the ring gear while the flywheel is removed during an engine rebuild or clutch service is inexpensive preventative maintenance that can help avoid future disassembly.
Installation is achieved using a traditional shrink-fit method. Cooling the flywheel and evenly heating the ring gear allows it to expand sufficiently for installation before it contracts to form a secure interference fit. When fitting the gear, the bevelled edge must face the rear of the vehicle to ensure correct starter engagement.
Manufactured in the USA to original specifications, this replacement flywheel ring gear provides dependable fitment and long service life for both authentic restorations and regularly driven vintage Ford vehicles.
